Project GRAD was launched in 1993 in Houston by James Ketelsen. Its mission was to improve the quality of education and enhance student achievement in schools that served low-income, minority, and otherwise underprivileged students, with the main goal being to bridge the achievement gap between these students and their more economically and socially privileged counterparts. The program operates in high schools as well as middle and elementary schools to prepare students for a potential future college education, operating off of the philosophy that student success begins at the earliest levels. Students are encouraged to develop their skills and complete college preparatory courses in order to get them on track to receiving a college education.
